New York Daily News: This is sham NYPD reform: But as usual, the mayor and commissioner are dodging
“Last week, the NYPD hosted a “Police Reform and Reinvention Multi-Language Listening Session” in response to Gov. Cuomo’s Executive Order, issued in August, requiring that all other police departments statewide to come up with plans to reinvent policing. If done in good faith, this initiative is an opportunity for the city to finally live up to its progressive ideals, to respond to the anguished voices of those who took to the streets in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and to lead the way on radically re-imagining the role of law enforcement in the lives of New Yorkers.
All signs suggest, however, that neither Mayor de Blasio nor NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea have any interest in addressing longstanding patterns of police violence and harassment of Black and Brown people. The process that the mayor and commissioner have rolled out is smoke and mirrors. It gives the illusion of something real when, in reality, it is designed to reinforce and justify the status quo.”
