Keith Baumann Led Training on Defending Termination of Parental Rights Cases

This week, Bronx Defenders Family Defense Attorney Keith Baumann, in collaboration with Brooklyn Defender Services, led a training at Legal Services NYC on defending termination of parental rights (TPR) cases based on permanent neglect.

The training session covered the statutory scheme for termination cases and what agencies must prove to demonstrate permanent neglect; the common defenses to permanent neglect causes of action and how to prove them at trial, including the use of experts to prove lack of diligent efforts and common evidentiary issues that arise; the use of discovery devices, making objections to case records, and filing motions to dismiss; settlement options, including conditional surrenders and suspended judgments; and how to prevent cases from leading to the termination stage.
