In Defense of Justice in Our Communities

When “revolving door” justice continually churns individuals in and out of the system, winning an appropriate sentence is not enough: in order to truly improve the lives of our clients, their communities, and the safety of society as a whole, defenders must develop new solutions to break the cycle.

Created and staffed by advocates with a broad vision of public defense work, The Bronx Defenders views clients not as "cases," but as whole people: caring parents, hard workers, recent immigrants, native New Yorkers, and students with hope for the future. Our staff of attorneys, social workers, parent advocates, investigators, administrative support, and community organizers is committed to working with our clients, their families, and their communities to address the critical issues that circumscribe their lives. Whether defending a client's liberty; connecting her to mental health services for the first time;  encouraging individuals to engage in the civic life of their community; or preparing neighborhood youth to be the next generation of leaders, The Bronx Defenders ultimately strives to improve the lives and futures of the Bronx community as a whole.

Each year, students participating in the Community Arts Exchange celebrate their year of learning, reading, and creating by working together on a large mural with a local artist.
By reaching out to the Bronx Community, The Bronx Defenders redefines the expanding role of the Public Defender.
Through the Parent Liaison Institute, community residents and Bronx college students learn to serve as lay advocates for families in their own community who are involved in the child welfare and Family Court systems.
On Election Day, the Voter Enfranchisement Project sends monitors to South Bronx polling sites in collaboration with several other concerned community groups. These trained community volunteers, law students, and lawyers assist voters in casting meaningful ballots at the polls and documenting any problems they encounter.
